My mother is seeing blur vision from past 4 months. She has starting things blur that are on a distance and far away. Can it be a cataract? I checked her eyes. Her eye pupil is looking completely black. However, the outer 10 % layer of iris is white.

Ideal would be to consult an ophthalmologist. Before which you can get her eyes checked for numbers if not checked recently. The outer 10% white iris can probably be arcus senilis. For any diagnosis to be made or confirmed, examination by the ophthalmologist would be required.

Hello. Blur vision in old age can be due to various reasons, most commonly which we see in clinics being- 1. Cataract (most common) 2. Retinopathies (due to hypertension or diabetes even if she is not having them presently) 3. Glaucoma 4. Other miscellaneous causes like vasculitis, uveitis, corneal degeneration etc. All of these result in blurring at distance and/or near. I appreciate your expertise and interest in examining your mother in whatever way you could. If the pupillary region is completely black (and not greyish or whitish), then chances of her having a cataract appear to be slim. The whitish outer part of iris (actually known as cornea) is just an a normal ageing phenomenon medically known as arcus senilis. Since it does not appear to be cataract as per your findings, so ruling out other probable diseases is a must at this point of time. Cataract surgery even if delayed a bit can restore vision to 6/6 or 6/9, but other problems need to be addressed urgently as vision loss due to them is irreversible. You can provide a good quality picture of her eyes so that cataract and any corneal problem can be ruled out easily. Consulting an ophthalmologist should be given a priority right now. You can reach me out anytime to discuss your case in further details so that I can guide you further about the required tests and treatment plan. Hope this helps. Thank you.
