I am taking petril for the treatment of anxiety, initially it was twice a day and now it's once a day. My psychiatrist is now helping me to slow down with petril, so we can finally stop it. I just wanted to know is it habit forming and hard to stop?

It is definitely harmful if taken on a longer run alone as it is a benzodiazepine and can cause cognitive decline, like memory changes, etc, personality changes, shrinking of brain and rarely withdrawal seizures. But since you are taking as per a psychiatrist advise, it should be fine. Ideally for anxiety ssri or snri are given as first choice and petril (clonazepam) can be used as sos (as when needed, monthly 2-3 times) in case of spike in anxiety or panic symptoms. Good luck.

Dear lybrate-user, petril is a benzodiazepine. It might be habit forming and hard to stop. It may be easy to stop for you at this young age. You can also learn other methods to manage your anxiety. Before it becomes habit forming, your psychiatrist is tapering it off. Please follow up with her/him.
