I went to a spa with a sauna and steam room. The showers were out in the open and there was a requirement for no shoes to be worn in the steam, sauna or shower area. I also used the small towel they give you to sit on. The people there were not the cleanest. What diseases could I get from the towel, walking barefoot in the steam/shower area and is there any std risk?

Hello- previous studies suggest the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) transmission among men who have sex with men (msm) is associated with characteristics of venues. However, very few studies have systematically compared hiv/sexually transmitted disease (std) prevalence among msm according to key venue type for sourcing sex partners. The results of this study suggest that those sourcing partners mainly from gay saunas have higher prevalence of hiv/syphilis when compared with those doing so via the internet or gay bars. Venue based (sauna-based) interventions using socio-ecological approaches are greatly warranted in order to reduce hiv and syphilis prevalence among msm in china.

There is negligible risk of getting any kind of std as such. Walking barefooted on a moist and damp public place can lead to athlete's foot, which is a fungal infection and can be easily treated. So you need not bother much. All the you should avoid visiting such unhygienic places.
