Lrti means infection of lower respiratory tract which means mainly infection if lungs and alveoli. The symptoms include cough, breathlessness, sputum. There are various disorders if lower respiratory tract. Pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchitis, all these are caused by bacterial infection. People with less immunity are prone to these infections. Tuberculosis is a spreading one. If we come in contact with infected person it likely spreads. So that means contagious. Also lower respiratory tract infections can be caused by viral infections too. Now the most familiar example is corona virus. So for proper treatment we need to diagnose whether it's simple viral or bacterial infection or whether there is pneumonia. If patient is experiencing mild symptoms such as cough with sputum which is seen on routine basis as seasonal variations treatment is easy. If the infection is serious it will cause lung damage and there is difficulty in breathing with fall in oxygen saturation then the treatment will be difficult as the patient needs to be hospitalized. So also different investigation are needed maybe sputum examination, blood tests, chest x-ray to find out exact diagnosis like what the disease and get proper treatment. Mild infections with just cough and sputum will be cured with cough syrups antibiotics. So it all depends on the severity if the disease. Any viral infection is not treated by antibiotics. Just symptoms wise treatment is given. In ayurveda there are good anti viral drugs. In viral infection antibiotics are given to prevent secondary bacterial infection as immunity goes low and there is a chance of bacterial infection. Also other than bacterial and viral infections we also have allergic bronchitis where in our body shows aggravated response against allergens like dust ,pollens, moisture, animal hairs, etc and there is inflammation or swelling inside the air passage like air sacs producing phlegm. And narrows the air passage giving the disease asthma, and there is breathing difficulty cough. These are treated with anti allergic medicine and if infected then antibiotics. Also pranayama yoga helps to control these disorders and avoiding the allergens. Also improving our immunity. Rasayana drugs in ayurveda will help to great extent and disease can be controlled. Also there is smokers disease where in there is cough and chronic obstruction inside the lungs.
