This is where most of the patients do mistake in using inhalers when suffering from asthma. In asthma the medicines are basically of 2 types, one is controller medicine and another is reliever medicines. Even when asthma is not showing any symptoms the controller medicines have to be taken, but at the lowest doses. And the controller medicines of asthma are inhaled corticosteroids, on the other hand reliever medicines are used whenever there are symptoms of asthma (commonly called asthma attacks), which bring down the symptoms of chest tightness and breathing difficulty. If some one uses adequate controller medicine then there are very few episodes of asthma attacks hence the person does not need reliever medicine often. But as in your case you take inhaler on'as is needed basis' and not regularly to control the disease process, which otherwise continues in your lungs without any check from medicines. So to have a good disease control and to remain healthy one should use the lowest possible controller medicines for many years and relievers medicines sometimes like presently you may need them because you have suffered asthma attack, as it was not under control of medicine. In addition to that, for the itching you described there might have been some allergy also, so may need oral medicines also to control both condition, you are suggested to visit a specialist and get yourself checked at earliest.
