My child is suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. Age 18 years joined veterinary college this year. He is in a habit of over thinking and fear psychosis. Like if some friends say something as laughs by going some distance away he thinks ki woh mere upper lagh kiye hair and when he doesn't tell us these things in evening in evening repeatedly he never gets relief. And also repeats certain things at home. I consulted a doctor he advised fluvoxin cr 100 and risdone mt 1 tab once daily. Is these tablets ok or affect his studies or brain pl advice.

Sir, as you are already under consultation for your child your doctor (psychiatrist) is the best who can settle your queries. There are multiple medications for treatment of ocd, so doctor may choose from them. Dose optimization is in purview of treating psychiatrist. Â

Hi lybrate-user! nothing to worry. If it is just the onset of ocd definitely he would recover provided you can seek a professional psycholgist for psychotherapy and counseling along with yoga and meditation so as to help him overcome ocd as soon as possible since this would give him added benefit and support to recover soon. Anything in the start before it worsens is the best treatment one could have to fully recover from the illness. Take care. Support him emotionally. Consider my suggestions as well since psychotherapy, yoga and meditation will give him a positive result to recover soon. Regards, psy. Msv. Â

The medicines are good and he is being treated for a serious condition and needs a lot of help via counseling as well. Please take him with you to determine the possible developmental issues that may have contributed to this condition. This is a fear-based condition and for some reason he has not been dealing with this childhood fear which has now developed unto these repetitive adaptations to seem to need it for normal functioning. The behavior will then become based on magical thinking and certain rituals will become necessary to do normal things making him believe that either the frequency or the ritual is important to its success. This of course is a fallacy but there will come a time that even if told the truth, his belief will defy any logic and he will continue behaving like that even if it cripples him in his daily routines. It only appears as though some other force is behind these behaviors and that he is compelled to act in this fashion. That is obviously not true but no one can convince him of anything different. The obsession is a repeating thought pattern with no meaningful outcome; and the compulsiveness is the need to act on those obsessions also in a repeated behavior pattern as though he just cannot help himself. This is all driven by fear and when he is frustrated with it, he will escalate anger over it. Doubt, insecurity, uncertainty, and lack of firm memory will all plague him and increase stress. There are certain behavioral techniques to be implemented and if they work he may get out of this condition rather easily. The other problem you describe is that he is becoming paranoid and that could be serious. Because it is a debilitating condition he needs to be made to relate to reality often by confronting his distortion of his environment. He may be given to delusions, hallucinations and disordered thinking and speech. He may be emotionally unresponsive, suffering from social withdrawal, extreme apathy, and lack of initiative and drive. If he is allowed to go internal he can strongly relate to his distortions and in fact believe in them to be true. His cooperation with the rehabilitation and medical intervention is often not as desirable as it should be. In which case someone has to monitor him constantly and enforce some compliance. He must be kept functional to get him to be aware of his surroundings and build on a steady and trusting relationship with at least one member of the family/community. He will be difficult to handle, and he himself will not find it easy to comply with therapeutic expectations. With someone strong and firm he could be made to follow a tight schedule and do many activities and exercises to prevent him from succumbing to this illness. Since he is young, there are good possibilities that he could recover completely if he complies and cooperates with the therapy. Â

Dear Yogesh, It is good that you are trying to help your son. Have faith in your doctor. Do you think she/he will any tablet that affects your son's studies? OCD is a brain disease. Fluvoxin and Risdone will heal that brain disease by working on brain chemicals. Take them as prescribed and get back to the doctor after 2-3 weeks. OCD needs long term treatment for MANY years. If he is not relieved, the dose of fluvoxamine will be increased.Â

Yes, both meds help. Resperidone has sedative effect but he should get over it after few days. Please note if he not on medications then his symptoms will make him difficult to concentrate on studies. Â
