I am a 43 years old male. I am suffering from stress/depression since last 18 years. After taking so many medications now since last 8 years I am on clonafit plus as per advise of my doctor. I am really feeling irritated with the medication process. But whenever I stopped the medication I again faced the complications like confusion in talking decisions, headache and leg pain, weakness, instant visible reaction due to high argerness, sadnesses, poor memory, lack of confidence etc etc. But on the other hand I am gaining weight upto 92 kg due to such a long medication and even fearing for probable big side effects. Apart from the clonafit plus I am regularly taking high bp& cholesterol medicine too. Kindly help me in this regard.

Hi lybrate-user, sorry to know that you suffer from chronic depression. If you r struggling to come off medications suggest that you may need medications for long term. However if are stable for more than 6 month you could try reducing gradually in consultation with your doctor and be off for a period 6 -8 weeks. If your symptoms return then you may need to restart the medications. Sometimes depression is like diabetes or hypertension where you need medication on long term basis. For the weight gain discuss with your doctor for alternative antidepressant.

If you need to cry, cry but do it constructively: suppressing your feelings and emotions may seem like a strategic way to cope with the negative symptoms of depression. But this technique is ultimately unhealthy. Feel your emotions. Set attainable goals: instead of making long to do list, start small and complete it. Give yourself rewards for doing something listen to some happy music or spent some time in nature eat and drink healthy sleep enough set a routine: schedule an activity that you have to do every day ? make it one you really enjoy ? and aim for as much balance as possible in your life. Express yourself: remember you are not alone. They are always people who care for you. Share your feelings with people who you trust. Volunteer yourself in some activity: this will help you to meet some new people you can also think of journaling. In this way you are in contact with your feelings. Remember this will take time. So take your time. Its not fix for everyone. Take your time and start one by one, little by little.

Dear Paresh, It is really sad that you have not learnt any non medical method of dealing with anxiety for the last 8 years. Even now it is not late. Go for therapy, jacobson's deep muscle relaxation, yoga, pranayama, physical exercises, healthy diet, etc before stopping clonafit. Stopping the medicine is NOT causing complications. It is your disorder that is not managed well without medicines. Clonafit is not the only reason for your weight gain. Even after stopping it, you need other treatments to control your weight. Hope your BP and cholesterol are under control. You are not going to stop those medicines because you know stopping them will cause worse complications!

Dear lybrate-user, along with taking medications, it would be required to see a registered clinical psychologist online/offline to address your behaviour and thought patterns that leads you into this emotional states. Start be being more physically active and by learn meditation techniques. You could start with morning walks or gym workouts. This would help you to gradually taper off the medications under your doctor’s supervision. All the best for your recovery. Sangeetha.

Understand your plight and frustration. It has been a long time in treatment but relying only on medication is the drawback. You must always accompany medication with therapy. So many years you have strived to get well banking only on medicines and it has not satisfied you. As a rule life is full of problems. Any attempts to escape will never help: you must learn to face these problems every day with good success. The counselor will help you in this regard. I also strongly believe that every crisis offers an opportunity for change, if you seek it and grab the opportunity. Please meet with a counselor and work on your emotions, particularly anger and fear. Exercise is very important but you have to build on it developmentally. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on tv or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate your sufferings. Don?t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard work must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be content with what you have. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and medication, and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Sir, my only advice is please ask such questions from psychiatrist who has been treating you since past 18 years, you will get convincing answer. Leaving medication will depend on initial symptoms and course of disease. Multiple episodes of illness or reoccurring familial issues makes it difficult to stop the medications.

Seems there is an inherent issue in your serotnergic transmission in the mind (brain), hence meds work and on stopping symptoms relapse. You have to make up your mind in regular continuous treatment like diabetes, hypertension etc. Also face the weight issues of medications with strict dietary schedule and life style modification. Good luck.
