Hi ,my partner is an alcoholic and can't stop drinking for months already. She is getting worse and worse every day and doesn't eat ,only drinking, smoking joint and vomiting. Can I start giving to her diazepam? She will need to mix it with alcohol while cutting off the beers. Thank you.

Dear lybrate-user, diazepam is not the drug to reduce drinking. It is to control withdrawal symptoms when she stops drinking. Both alcohol and diazepam act on the brain in the same way. So together it may be unmanageable. You partner needs admission and total stoppage of alcohol, management of withdrawal symptoms, motivational enhancement therapy and probably anti craving tablets like naltrexone, baclofen, acamprosate, etc. She needs medical treatment also for her various medical illnesses she would have developed over months. She may need a psychiatric assessment also. Most probably due to a psychiatric disorder, she may be using alcohol and joint. It also needs to be treated simultaneously. As a partner, you can motivate and accompany her to the hospital/deaddiction centre.

No, you can't mix alcohol with diazepam, it could be life threatening combination. In rare cases could be fatal as well. So, I would suggest you to get your friend for a formal psychiatric assessment so that we can provide her with best possible care.

Diazepam, is to treat alcohol withdrawal and should not be mixed with her drinks. From your description and her usage of other substances, I suggest that you admit her in a rehabilitation center. It will be difficult for her to handle this condition on her own or in the surroundings of her home: she has gotten conditioned to the environment and there will be too many stimulants around her making it really difficult. In the rehabilitation center they will consider her requirements for medication for the substance withdrawal, and for any underlying conditions. That treatment will be more comprehensive, and the change of environment will give her a chance to deal with the issues, and cessation of substances more effectively. Giving up addiction is very difficult and everything that is conducive to her recovery must be given priority.
