Good day. Recently ivr been having high anxiety due to life issues and relationship issues. Panic attacks, heart racing, fingers face and feet tingling. I feel this anxiety is not permanent. My doctor gave me urbanol and trazodone. I do not eat to be on trazodone for years. Am I able to use urbanol temporarily to keep my calm until this difficult patch passes? I do not feel I need to be on permanent medication.

Dear Storm, Urbanol, if it is clobazam, is a benzodiazepine. It will reduce your anxiety during the difficult situations. But trazodone in adequate dose in the long run will reduce many difficult situations itself. With clobazam, many small problems will not be tolerated and you will continue with frequent use of it. Later on, your nervous system develops tolerance to clobazam and it will not work with the same efficiency. You are young and you will be better if you learn to make difficult situations less difficult by using your strengths as coping capacity.Â

For some people anxiety resolves after some time, for some it continues for many years. So depending your condition you need to take treatment. Consult with your psychiatrist regularly and take medications as prescribed, also combine cognitive behavioural therapy along with this, so it would make you feel much better. Good luck. Â

Dear Lybrate user, it must've be hard going through all this. Since you don't want to be on permanent medication, I would suggest that you go for psychological counseling/therapy. A combination of medication and therapy would work best. Therapy can help you go to the root of your concerns and help you deal with them, in turn reducing your anxiety. With certain strategies, techniques and important skills such as communication skills etc. That you learn in therapy; can be helpful for you to deal with your relationship concerns, anxiety and other issues. Especially cognitive behaviour therapy can be especially helpful and is widely used to deal with anxiety. Once you've learnt to manage the concerns, you can also reduce your dependence on medications. On how you should gradually stop the medications, should be done under the guidance of a psychiatrist. Therapy can also help you in the long term. So, please consult a psychologist. Regards, aaradhana reddy counselling psychologist. Â

Madam as you have mentioned that these anxiety symptoms have come after some personal issues with your life. In that case it's unlikely that you will require long term medications, however genetic vunerability to psychiatric illness needs to be kept in mind and treatment depends on multiple other factors. So please consult your doctor and follow his complete advice or otherwise stop medicines and go to mode of treatment you trust. Lastly we as psychiatrist don't boast about our treatment, or say our treatment is best (as mentioned in one of other therapist comment below) we do have more than lakhs of success stories for our line of treatment. So choose wisely. Â

1.Use Deep Breathing Deep breathing is another effective way to relieve stress and anxiety. It helps you with physical symptoms such as shallow breathing and rapid heart rate, and it also helps with controlling your thoughts. When you practice deep breathing, you're forced to take your thoughts off of whatever is causing you anxiety and to focus on the breathing technique that you are using. 2.Keep A Journal Journaling can be an effective way to deal with your anxiety and to find relief. The medication you are on is good for depression with anxiety. Please don't change your dosage or stop medicines without the doctor's approval. You must combine medication with therapy. This is extremely important for your anxiety and depression. Life is full of problems as a norm. Any attempts to escape will never help: you must learn to face these problems every day with good success. The counselor will help you in this regard. I also strongly believe that every crisis offers an opportunity for change, if you seek it and grab the opportunity. Please meet with a counselor and work on your emotions, particularly anger and fear. Exercise is very important but you have to build on it developmentally. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on tv or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate your sufferings. Don?t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard work must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be content with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. Â
