My cousin is diagnosed with Psychosis. She is 18 year old. Doctor advised her risperdal 1mg. Symptoms gone just after 1week. Now she is absolutely normal. Doctor has reduced medicine from 1mg to 0.5mg. Now she is fine no problem at all. Please advise us How long she should take this medicine. Can we stop after some time? Is this a life long treatment?

It depends on how long she had the symptoms for. If it was less than a week then you should continue the medicine for 6 months at least. If you stop too soon then she may relapse. Most patients of single episode of psychosis do get another also, or their disease changes into schizophrenia. In such a case life long medicine will be required.

Mostly, people with psychosis need to be on the medication for lifelong. Since you have consulted a doctor, please follow his advice. You are seeing the difference with the medicines prescribed by him. Your cousin is feeling better because of the medication only. Please do not stop the medication without the doctor's advice. The doctor must have taken the complete medical and family history of your cousin and only after that must have prescribed the medicines. Have faith in him. If you doubt his knowledge or diagnosis, you can have second opinion. But it appears to me that, following the present doctors medication will be helpful, as it is showing positive results.
