Good morning. My husband is 37 years, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2019. He drinks alcohol everyday, drinks regular soda and eats regular food, and he also smokes alot. All he does right is inject his insulin (actrapid and protaphane 5 times a day). My question is, what are the risks of this lifestyle?

Hello, thanks for the query. I have seen the details mentioned. From that I understand that he has type 1 diabetes (which is always insulin dependent). However, it is absolutely essential to have a properly regulated lifestyle, if blood glucose levels are to be maintained with in the specified limits. Just taking multiple injections of insulin is not at all the only treatment. Since there is no mention of either fasting, pp glucose levels or hba1c% & dosages of insulin being taken, dietary pattern, extent of daily exercise, weight, height and lipid profile. Madam, please understand diabetes is not just increase of blood glucose levels, if glucose levels are not well controlled, then it damages every vital organ in the body like eye (retina), small & large blood vessels, kidneys, heart, peripheral nerves, lower limbs and also can lead to erectile dysfunction. It is necessary to maintain fbg closer to 100 mg, pp <180 mg & hba1c% < 6.5%. If you have any questions please do come back. Alcohol is bad in a diabetic person as it can lead to accelerated liver damage and so is smoking. Thanks.
