Hi, in hyperthyroidism usually anti-thyroid drugs like neo-mercazole are given for about 18 to 24 months. After that if thyroid function has not reverted to normal then other options are considered. Those include surgical removal or using radio active iodine to ablate the thyroid secreting cells. Because if neo-mercazole has not been able to suppress the activity of thyroid gland even after using for 3 years, then it may not benefit much. So you will have look for above mentioned options. Radioactive iodine is a really good option. Thanks for the question.
