Ativan is a Benzodiazepine not preferred for treatment for anxiety for longer duration as it is highly addictive and can cause dependence and side effects. It is meant for short term use only. Ideal would be to get your anxiety treated by SSRIs or SNRI group of drugs which are safer on longer run and also address the cause of anxiety. CBT can also be combined with medications. Good luck.

Ativan (lorazepam) is often used to treat insomnia and anxiety disorder for short term. There are usually other safer drugs which are started along with lorazepam who takes at least a week to show its effect and thereafter lorazepam is usually tapered off and stopped. Taking lorazepam for longer duration, especially without a clinician's advise, will make you dependent on same, after which it becomes really tough to stop/quit same. So it's in your best interest if you visit a psychiatrist to consult in-person so that he/she can assess you in detail and accordingly appropriate medicines can be started.
