Hi, am a prediabetes for past two months with fbs-120, ppbs-160 and hba1c 6.5%. Doctor prescribed glycomet 500 sr to take in the morning. I used take it before breakfast and ppbs used to be 120 to 135. Today I took glycomet 500 sr immediately after the breakfast and ppbs is 99. Request for few clarifications (1) when to take glycomet 500 sr - before or after breakfast? (2) any other test should be done to check sugar level (waiting to complete 3 months to do hba1c). (3) any other tips to reduce sugar levels (fbs is around 91 to 103 and ppbs 99 to 125 and am on zero added sugar, zero added maida diet). Thanks in advance. With kind regards,

Hello, thanks for the query. I have seen the details mentioned. As regards the timing of taking metformin (either plain or sr), there is no hard and fast rule of taking before or after food. Some people experience gastrointestinal side effects when taken before food, so those are advised to take it after food. There is no or there is hardly any change in its end effect on blood glucose. A difference in a single reading has no much relevance. You can continue to take it as it is comfortable to you. Usually in pre-diabetes adapting a modified lifestyle is more important than taking metformin. Dietary changes, like avoiding sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, foods made from maida, bakery items, colas & processed foods are important. Secondly doing regular exercises for over 1 hour a day, maintaining near normal bmi (< 23 kg/sq meter, since there is no mention of height or weight, there is no way to know the bmi). You have mentioned "no added sugar" please understand all the foods that we eat gets (carbs) converted to glucose. So over all intake of carbs need to be controlled not just sugar. Thanks.
