I am a 39 year old woman with a 4 years old son. I am a single mother, working as a Director with one of the automotive groups. Normally I am a very happy and easy going but lately I have started loosing my patience on small little things and anger is always sitting on my head. Whenever things around me are not very positive and any of my work keeps pending for long, I completely lose it and feel heavily depressed. Kindly suggest some remedy for keeping my cool and accept negativity with a cheerful zeal.

Hi Mam, Many people do not act positively to reduce the stress in their lives until physical symptoms force them to consider how their lifestyle is affecting their well-being. Don't leave stress unchecked or wait until it makes you ill. Meditation is one of the best ways to lead a stress-free life. A simple, 20 minutes meditation will make your refresh and relaxed. Besides, it also helps to reduce your anxiety, tension and stress. In the middle of your work, just take a break and connect with yourself. The following are some of the more familiar self-help relaxation techniques available: Creative Visualisation: You are encouraged to imagine yourself lying in a cornfield, in a hammock by the sea, sitting in a deck chair, or anywhere you feel relaxed and to hear the sounds of the trees, wind and waves. Being immersed in such an idyllic scene induces a state of relaxation and tension should drain away. Quieting: Aims to provide a way of diverting the mind from stressful thoughts by focusing on more relaxing emotions: for example, chanting, focusing on breathing, counting things such as instances of a particular colour. The traditional ‘counting sheep’ when trying to fall asleep can be seen as a form of quieting. Progressive Relaxation: This involves tensing and then relaxing each part of the body in turn, working up through the whole body until completely relaxed. This technique takes about 20-30 minutes to complete and is very effective at bringing about physical relaxation. Maintain a journal of negative thoughts and try to challenge negative thoughts through cbt exercise which you can learn through counseling. Consult with me for counseling & Psychotherapy.

First of all, let me congratulate you on all your achievements and for your courage and strength. Single mother with four year old child and director says volumes about the strength and resilience of your personality. Your current problems most likely represent an impending depressive episode. Please make sure your thyroid levels are normal. Also make sure hemoglobin is normal. In any case you will probably need safe antidepressants like escitalopram or sertraline under medical supervision. Few more details that I will need are whether you have any other medical or psychological problems, and whether you have family history of bipolar disorder? Remember, DEPRESSION IS NOT A SIGN OF WEAKNESS, IT IS A SIGN OF HAVING TRIED TO REMAIN STRONG FOR TOO LONG! Take care!
