Hypothyroidism is an endocrine condition where in your thyroid gland is not producing adequate amounts of thyroid hormone. Hence you need to take the thyroxine replacement from outside. You cannot get rid of this, it will be there all your life and you have to take thyroxine replacement all your life. But please do not worry and get stressed, if you take the medication as prescribed by your doctor, your TSH, T3 and T4 levels will be in normal range. If you stop the medication, your thyroid function tests will get deranged and you may then start seeing symptoms of weight gain, dry skin, period problems etc. You can lead a very happy, heathy and productive life even though you have hypothyroidism. But make sure to keep your TSH in normal range before you try for next pregnancy (if you are planning one)

Dear lybrate-user, I understand your frustration about your health and I'll share some facts about hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism, long lasting or not will depend on the cause. You need to take a few tests to decide that. If tests indicate it to be taken then you have to take for lifetime. Also you've to adjust the dose depending on TSH levels.
