The composite restorative material sets or bonds with the tooth mechanically. whereas the glass ionomer cements(GIC) bonds chemically with the tooth. For the back teeth you can with composites. Composites are available in different shades according to tooth color. But GIC is available only in few shades. Strength wise composite is stronger than GIC.

Sir, Both composite and GIC are good material for filling your back teeth and are commonly used. The choice depends on what type of cavity you have in your tooth.

If it is a small cavity then GIC can be used. If the cavity is a bit more deeper than you may need to use  a stronger material like resin- modified GIC or a composite.

Composite is usually used for front teeth where the color is important , as it is available in different shades.
