Knee pain in elderly is commonly due to osteoarthritis which means degeneration of joint cartilage causing friction between joint surfaces, leading to pain and stiffness. Lifestyle modifications and physical therapy are important treatment aspects to maintain functionality. 1. Knee stretching and strengthening exercises to improve knee strength. 2. Avoid jogging or physical activity that increases knee pain. But absolute rest is not advised. Engage in activity like swimming or walking , but perform activity which is painless 3. Application of analgesic cream over knee and warm fomentation before exercises. Apply cold pack after exercises 4. Weight loss if obese. 5. Simple analgesics like paracetamol when pain is present. 6. When pain or disability is significant, intra articular viscoelastic injection or PRP injection is helpful. PRP therapy is safe and effective therapy for knee OA. It involves blood component derived from patients own blood to be injected in knee joint. This causes regeneration of damaged cartilage. 7. In advanced cases Knee replacement is the only option.

Your mother may be suffering from age related degenerated changes in her knee joints. Early morning stiffness and difficulty walking especially with seasonal change is common. Along with allopathic and homeopathic treatments you need to take her to a good physiotherapist who can mobilise the joint to increase the range of motion, give modalities like IFT or Ultrasound therapy for pain relief and exercises to increase the strength of the muscles, and teach her a proper gait pattern. Also please get her Vitamin D and calcium levels checked.
