Do anti depressants lead to suicide or suicidal tendencies if taken for longer period of time. Do they become ineffective if taken for longer duration?

There are few studies which state so. When a person is recovering from severe depression with suicidal ideas, antidepressants improve the sleep and energy levels first before acting on the thought, in the intervening period a person may indulge in a suicidal behavior, but it is mostly an unwarranted fear very very rarely seen in clinical setting.

A few studies show that in the initial phase of treatment of severe depression with suicidal ideas, motivation and sleep improve before improvement in the depressive features. During this phase in rare cases, the patient may indulge in suicidal acts. However this effect is extremely rare and need not be worried about. Also it is a transient effect which goes once the anti depressant action start. There is no long term increase in suicidal tendency.

The term 'longer duration' is vague one. Lets get it this way...there are guidelines about how long antidepressants should be continued in any given case. Discontinuation of treatment before that period carries high risk of relapse. On the otherhand, decrease in effectiveness over time is not established. Emergence of suicidal ideas after initiating treatment with antidepressants is not established. But yes, some studies have observed that initial improvement in motor activity and energy before improvement in depressive ideas might increase chances of acting upon these wishes.

The reverse is true as depression can lead to suicide. They do not become ineffective with use.
