Caused by the Plasmodium parasite, malaria is a life threatening disease that can be treated with early diagnosis and proper diet. The treatment available for malaria focuses mainly on the elimination of Plasmodium parasites from the bloodstream. The main problem a malaria patient suffers from is fever.

In such a scenario, supplementing medicines with a proper diet for malaria can do great help in curing this ailment:

  1. It is important to make sure that the body has adequate nutrients to fight the pathogen.
  2. It is important to make sure that the body gets a sufficient amount of fluids like electoral water, sugarcane juice, coconut water, etc.
  3. Moderation is to be maintained for the intake of fats like cream, butter, cheese, etc. This is because these components are hard to digest and the body at this point of time requires easy to digest fast nutrients.
  4. Also, high fiber foods, processed meat, caffeinated beverages, oily and spicy food must be avoided.

Malaria Diet Restrictions: Food Items To Limit

  1. Stay away from fats. Excessive use of fat in cooking or eating fry foods aggravate nausea, impaired digestion which leads to diarrhea. They should be far from your meals as they make meals heavy, and is difficult to digest.
  2. Spicy, fried and refined food should be avoided
  3. Cake, pastries, maida should be avoided.
  4. Sauces and pickles should not be taken.
  5. Avoid hot tea and coffee.

Do's And Dont's While Following Diet Plan for Malaria

To avoid malaria issue, you can start making some simple changes in your lifestyles and food habits which are mentioned below, along with the diet plan mentioned above:

Do's : When you are suffering from malaria, it is also very important that you take proper care of your diet. You must light and digested food which is easy for intake. Also taking orange and papaya, fruit juices and lemon juice mixed with honey is advised. Ensure the food you eat had protein and hygiene. Food preferences include jiggery, amla and Bengal gram for better level of maintained HB. You can also take the tulsi decoction while suffering from malaria. Take 15-20 leaves of tulsi, 5 gm of minced ginger, 10 raw pepper, some turmeric and give that a boil in water. Taking this can help you in getting over malaria, faster. One must also consume milk for body protein and have old rice in place of new rice. And make sure, you must not sleep immediately after taking your meal for the day and night.

Don'ts:

  1. Don’t let the symptoms last longer. As soon as you see the symptoms and suffer from high fever, lower conscious level and dizziness, visit the doctor immediately. Delays can result in further health imbalances and lead to serious problems.
  2. Don’t let water lock anywhere and avoid the stagnation of water since that can create the breeding of mosquitoes around. Also, dump away the water that gets stored on coolers, garbage, every once in a week.
  3. Do not let your children move out to play in open grounds with short sleeves shirts and short pants. Their skin should not be exposed for mosquitoes to bite.
  4. Avoid blood transfusion which can be infectious and prone to symptoms to malaria. Make sure, you keep yourself and your close ones away from such infections.

Food Items You Can Easily Consume In Malaria

  1. Firstly the most important, drink boiled water or sterilized water.
  2. Drink lots of fluids which can be anything from water, milkshakes, juices, coconut water anything. The more the fluids in the body the faster the malaria parasites move out from the body.
  3. Have a high carbohydrate diet. Rice should be chosen over wheat and other millets. Rice helps in easy digestion and faster release of energy.
  4. Have a high protein diet. As high temp makes your body weak and reduces your appetite, protein helps for the protection of the body and synthesis of immune bodies which will fight against the parasites.
  5. Fats are like poison for malaria patients. Keep them as far as possible. They make the meals very heavy and is difficult to digest. As malaria is many a times accompanied with nausea and vomiting. If vomiting present give a liquid diet till the vomiting subsides.
  6. Fresh fruits and vegetables help to detox the body. All fruits work well for malaria. Combination of fruits with different colors is recommended.
  7. Omega 3 fats help to reduces the inflammation in the body.
  8. Include a supplements of multivitamins, B-complex and minerals which will help to rejuvenate your body.
