How is the treatment done?

Hepatitis E is termed as a virus that mainly affects the liver. Unlike its predecessors, the hepatitis virus is short lived and does not cause any long term damage.

It is majorly caused by the food and water consumed by an individual. It can also occur due to contamination caused by feces or stool of another individual infected by Hepatitis E. Raw meat or undercooked food, especially from animals like pig can also be one of the reasons for the spread of this disease.

This disease is a one time occurrence and is very unlikely to infect the same person again.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Hepatitis E can be combated with the help of the vaccination. In other cases, it only requires only requires symptomatic treatment which helps to clear the virus from the body. Immunosuppressive therapy should be minimised as it helps to clear the virus by 50% from the body. Antiviral therapy should be considered for patients for whom immunosuppressive therapy cannot be reduced and for those who do not achieve viral clearance after reducing immunosuppression.

A healthy diet devoid of unhygienic drinks and food should be maintained.

Drug or alcohol abuse should be avoided for the longest time possible.

Water should be consumed adequately to avoid dehydration.

A follow up should be maintained with the doctor and no medicines or herbal products should be taken without his or her consultation.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Anyone diagnosed with Hepatitis E is eligible to undergo treatment, as it requires only antibiotics or a vaccination at most to cure it.

Hepatitis E can pose as a threat to pregnant women and caution should be hence maintained while treating the same.
