How To Prevent Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a widely prevalent and potentially fatal type of cancer across the globe. Reportedly, about one out of every 23 men and 25 women develops cancer of the rectum or colon at some point in their life. 

Although the exact causes of colorectal cancer are not known, there are certain risk factors that are likely to increase one’s chances of having the disease. However, there are ways to prevent the risk of developing colorectal cancer. Here is what you can do –

  • Eat a healthy diet 

A diet loaded with sufficient amounts of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables is linked with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer. Focus on eating lean meat instead of red meat and processed meat – pork, beef, lamb, hot dogs, and so on, as they increase the likelihood of having cancer of the colon or rectum. 

  • Stay active 

Studies show that people, who are physically inactive, are more likely to develop colorectal cancer. Therefore, you should look to increase your daily physical activity. Doctors recommend exercising at least 3-4 days a week to minimize the risk of cancer. Aim for light to moderate amounts of aerobic exercises, such as running, walking, and cycling to stay active and improve your overall fitness. 

  • Keep a check on your weight 

Several studies have linked obesity or excess overweight with a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Therefore, it is advisable that you maintain healthy body weight to avoid any complications. Mindful eating and exercising regularly can help you achieve an ideal weight and keep a tab on it.

  • Quit smoking 

People, who are in the habit of smoking, or have been a chain smoker for years, are at high risk of developing cancer of the rectum or colon. Studies have also shown that mortality rates for colorectal cancer are considerably high among smokers. Therefore, if you have been smoking or using tobacco for years now, you should certainly consider quitting the habit right away to avert the risk of cancer.

  • Limit alcohol consumption

While moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with heart health, overconsumption of it is strongly linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer. As per The American Cancer Society, men and women should limit alcohol consumption to two drinks a day and one drink a day, respectively. 

  • Get screened at regular intervals

Screening tests help detect cancer before the symptoms show up. These tests can detect growths called polyps on the rectum or colon, and remove them before they turn cancerous. Screening tests can also find rectal or colon cancer at an early stage when treatment is more likely to be effective and successful. It is recommended that people start undergoing screening tests at age 45 to prevent the risk of cancer. Speak with your healthcare provider or doctor about when you should begin and which tests might be right for you.

Studies show that certain habits related to weight, exercise, and diet are associated with the risk of colorectal cancer, as well as with other types of cancer. Altering some of these habits with healthy lifestyle changes can be hard, but it can help reduce the risk of cancer and several other medical conditions, thus allowing you to live a healthier, fitter, and better life.
