Symptoms Of Normal Delivery
Last Updated: Apr 13, 2020
A woman who is about to deliver a baby might experience an increased urge to urinate. This symptom appears because the head of the baby drops into the pelvis. The urinary bladder is put under tremendous pressure due to low position of the head of the baby. This leads to urgent need for urination. When the baby drops the breathing of the pregnant woman becomes easier due to less pressure exerted on the diaphragm. The appearance of this symptom indicates the woman is about to have a normal delivery.
The mucus plug passes
When the mucus plug passes it indicates the labor is near for the pregnant woman. During pregnancy the cervical opening remains closed due as cervical glands produce thick mucus. It is important that the mucus plug must be eliminated before delivery of the baby. The head of the baby which is exerting pressure leads to the expulsion of the mucus plug. Sometimes it is expelled in the form of blood-tinged vaginal discharge. In some rare cases the mucus plus is not expelled till the time labor starts.
The cervix dilates
When the cervix gets dilated it indicates that labor is approaching near. This symptom gets detected when a professional performs a pelvic examination on the woman who is pregnant. Sometimes it starts weeks or even days before the labor begins. When the cervix is dilated to the width of 10 cm it can be referred to as fully dilated.
Thinning of the cervix
Thinning of the cervix occurs in addition to the dilation of the cervix. This symptom normally appears weeks before the labor starts in the pregnant woman. It is important to note that a cervix that is thin gets dilated easily. This symptom can be detected when the healthcare provider conducts a pelvic examination.
Back pain
As the delivery of the baby approaches woman might experience back pain. This pain is dull in nature and occurs in the lower back. Contraction may be accompanied by back pain and it can also be experienced in other locations as well. Loosing of the joints specifically in the pelvic area may be noticed by some of the women. The loosening of the joints occurs when the third trimester is in progress.
Contractions
Contractions can vary from one pregnant woman to another. The pain of contractions can be described as similar to that of menstrual cramps. It can be felt like stabbing pain. As the time of labor approaches the frequency and strength of the pain increases by many folds. A woman can suffers from irregular contraction it can give a false impression of the labor. The false labor is mild in comparison to the original labor pain. A signal of true labor is when contraction occurs regularly 10 minutes apart.
A burst of energy
Many women experience a sudden burst of energy and excitement in weeks just before the labor. This feeling is in contrast to the feeling of fatigue. This sudden burst of energy is referred to as nesting. This burst of energy is accompanied by urgency to do things done quickly for making plans for the baby.
Feeling the urge to have a bowel movement (diarrhea)
Pelvic pain and pressure are often described as the reason for feeling the urge to have a bowel movement. In days preceding to the labor some of the women experience loose bowel movement or diarrhea.
Your water breaks
One of the most vital signs that indicate a labor has begun for a pregnant woman is when the amniotic membranes get ruptured. It is not as dramatic gush of liquid as shown in the movies. The fluid trickles or drips slowly. The fluid that drips should be odorless and colorless. It sometimes gets difficult to distinguish it from the urine. If the water breaks the doctor must be consulted immediately.
