Benefits of yoga for constipation

Constipation has become more or less a lifestyle disorder. There is no one specific cause of constipation. The reasons for constipation range from consuming too much junk food to being stressed, inappropriate working hours, and lack of proper sleep. People often take various laxative medicines to help them in the problem of constipation. If anyone is looking for a natural and promising solution to the problem of constipation then the answer is yoga.

Yoga helps in alleviating the problem of constipation by managing the stress level of an individual as it can immensely improve the digestive system. There are several asanas in yoga that stretch the body and exert good pressure on the digestive organs which increases the oxygen and blood circulation in these organs thereby enhancing the chances of stool moving through the system of an individual. For ensuring the proper functioning of the digestive system yoga helps in removing the toxins from these organs which aid in alleviating constipation. Given below are some of the asanas in yoga that provide assistance in alleviating the problem of constipation in an individual.

Pavanamuktasana Or Wind Relieving Pose

Lie straight on your back and bring your right knee to your chest. Hold your knee with your hands while you slowly inhale and exhale for at least 20 times. Repeat the process with the left leg and complete the routine by pressing both your knees to your chest. Stay in the posture for at least 2 minutes and focus on your breathing. You will feel a pressure on your stomach when you perform this yoga. This asana is the best measure when it comes to releasing gas and stimulating the bowels. It does that by massaging the stomach, colon and small intestine.

Balasana Or Child Pose

Stress can lead to constipation and this pose is very effective in that it releases stress and also puts pressure on the stomach, thereby stimulating it. It is an easy to do pose. You simply need to sit on your knees and make sure that there is a one foot gap between them. Then bend down till your stomach touches your thighs. Now, stretch your hands forward. While you stay in the pose for at least 5 minutes, inhale and exhale slowly.

Forward Bend Or Uttanasana

Stand with your back straight and your feet hip-length apart. Take a deep breath and bend forward completely till your head faces your knees. Then press your palms against the floor or hold the back of your ankles so that you can feel the pressure on your legs and stomach. Beginners can bend the knees if it feels too uncomfortable. Hold the pose for 10 seconds and breathe evenly all this while. This exercise not only makes one more flexible, but also encourages bowel movement by exerting pressure on the abdomen, which stimulates digestion. Practice these easy postures every day in the morning and start your day with energy.

Apart from yoga, a healthy diet is necessary to get relief from the problem of constipation. The intake of foods rich in fiber, fruits and greeny leafy vegetables as fallen drastically which plays a humongous part in the development of constipation in a person. Fortunately, there are some food products which when added to the diet provide relief from the problem of constipation. Incorporating prunes in the diet can be very beneficial as they are a rich source of fiber.

Incorporating fruits like apple, kiwifruit, figs, pears, and citrus fruit like oranges help in alleviating the problem of constipation. Greeny leafy vegetable like spinach is not only rich in fiber but they also have folate, vitamin K and vitamin C. Greeny leafy vegetables add weight and bulk to the stool which helps them to pass through the gut easily. Incorporating rhubarb in the diet can prove to be very advantageous as it is famous for its bowel stimulating properties. If a person has been prescribed medicine for treating the problem of constipation then it must be taken regularly since it plays a vital role in alleviating the problem of constipation.
