Benefits of yoga for indigestion

Indigestion is a very common problem which can occur in any individual at any time. Indigestion is a collective term for describing symptoms like feeling full during the meal, pain in the upper abdomen, uncomfortable feeling after the meal. The cause of indigestion can range from unhealthy eating habits to diseases whose one of the symptom is indigestion. People suffering from indigestion opt for various medicines to provide them relief from the condition but they have side effects associated with it. If someone wants a side effect a free natural form of treatment for indigestion then he/she can opt for yoga. In order to make the digestive system work properly and alleviate the problem of indigestion yoga functions in a systematic order to clear the blockages.

There are some asanas in yoga help in improving the flow of blood in the lower region which assists in nourishing the digestive system by supplying freshly oxygenated blood. This makes the digestive system feel rejuvenated and fresh. Yoga helps in relieving stress from the body which makes the body feel calm and healthy from within. Given below are some of the asanas that help in alleviating the problem of indigestion in an individual.

Stress is a leading cause behind indigestion. This yoga posture works to release stress and eventually removes the symptoms of indigestion. First, you need to sit with your legs crossed and your back straight. You hands should rest, palms facing up, on your knees. Now curl in your forefinger and middle-finger of your right hand and use your thumb to hold your right nostril. Inhale through your left nostril and count till 4 as you take the air in. Press both your nostrils and retain the air for 10 seconds. Now, hold your left nostril using your ring finger and exhale through your right nostril and count till 10. Let the air out with force so that your stomach goes inside.

Balasana Or Child Pose

It is easy to perform and the asana works to stimulate your stomach muscles and the digestive tract. Therefore, you can digest food much better. You simply need to sit on your knees which are a foot apart. Now bend forward and either stretch your arms in front of you, or keep them behind you as per convenience.

Plough Pose Or Halasana

Lie flat on a mat. Relax, and slowly lift your legs off the ground, till your legs become perpendicular to the upper half of your body. Now use your hands to support your hips and bend your legs over your head. Keep bending your legs till your feet touch the ground. Now, release your hands off your hips and place them flat on the mat. Hold this position for a while and concentrate on your breathing. This is an advanced yoga posture. Therefore you might not be able to perform it completely at one go. Do not strain yourself. Stretch your legs as is much as you can. Eventually, you will become more flexibly and will be able to perform it without any hiccups.

In order to alleviate the problem of indigestion apart from yoga an individual needs to consume a healthy diet along with incorporating food products which alleviate the problem of indigestion. Including foods rich in high fiber like oatmeal can be beneficial as they reduce the symptoms of indigestion along with improving the health of the intestine. Adding yogurt to the diet would be a great idea as not only it has a soothing effect on the stomach but it also contains probiotics which improve the digestion of an individual.

Addition of green leafy vegetables in the diet like asparagus, kale, and spinach can be advantageous as they are highly alkaline in nature which boosts the digestion of an individual. Incorporating foods like banana and melons can also help in alleviating the problem of indigestion. If a person is under medical treatment for indigestion due to other diseases then he/she should take his/her medicines regularly as advised by the doctor since medicine also plays an important role in alleviating the problem of indigestion.
