Hi Dr, please suggest the treatment of stargardt disease in 9 years old child. Can we have some home remedy, please suggest how can we cure it and improve the vision.

Stargardt is one of the most common macular dystrophy wherein the gene responsible for removal of toxic metabolites is absent which results in accumulation of lipofuschin leading to damage to photoreceptors which are responsible for vision. Currently, there is no treatment for the disease. Wearing sunglasses and hats outdoors and blue-light blocking glasses when exposed to artificial light sources reduces the buildup of lipofuscin. Use of low vision aid also helps. Antioxidats, isotretinoin, gene therapy are all in the experimental stage for treatment modality. I would recommend you to see a ocular geneticist for any recent research update and for genetic counselling.
