Hello. Firstly, I would appreciate this website and the people behind it for helping people seeking medical advice. Basically, I am a resident of Hyderabad, India and I'm 22 years old. During August last year i.e. 2017, I was diagnosed with Asthma. I suffered for 2 months straight. I was on inhalers (formoterol) and nebulisers. With time, I was back healthy. Then in August this year i.e. 2018, I got an asthma attack. It was a minor attack but doctors suspect of higher intensity attacks in the future. Although I'm continuing medication prescribed, I had a huge doubt. As a bachelor in Pharmacy, I'm planning to move to Southern Ontario in Canada during January, 2019. My major concern is, whether the extremely cold weather in Canada aggravate my asthma? Doctors said that it's seasonal, mostly when winters arrive. So will it be a wise decision to go to Canada, which is a very cold country, for my post graduate education? I just don't want to risk my life and health and would seek your help to make an informed decision.

Hi Lybrate user You seem to have Bronchial Asthma attacks in the month of August in India (when its humid) and I presume you are all right in winters here. Cold weather may be trigger for an Asthmatic attack and it is difficult to predict how your breathing would be in Canada where weather conditions are extremely cold with different flora and fauna. You are also obese as your BMI is 37.5 which is an additional risk factor for Asthma and its management. Key is to keep your bronchial Asthma under control (assessment can be done by simple questionnaire like Asthma Control Test) and take your medications regularly. Know your triggers and avoid them as much as possible. Get S.Phadiatop and total IgE test done. Check how good is your PFT. Despite all these measures an Asthma attack may be triggered any time. Follow your pulmonologist regularly.

It is seasonal asthma, occuring in august, which is not cold season. It can be due to allergy to some allergen prevelant in August. Not must that extreme cold will aggrevate your problem.
