Hi, I have undergone a CSF test on 3rd October 2018. But I am still suffering from the side effects. Though things have improved a bit but the discomfort persists. How long does it take to recover completely from the side effects? What precautions should I take for my speedy recovery? Please suggest!

Regards Lybrate user. Csf testing involves invasive procedure to reach into the coverings of the spinal cord to retrieve small amount of cerebrospinal fluid. The procedure may lead to a small puncture hole in the coverings and just like any other wound, it will heal within 2-3 weeks. However, there are possibilities of small scar developing when the wound heals and if not appropriately moved in the first 2-3 weeks, the scar may tend to get rigid and then cause pressure on the small nerves in the area. Also, the coverings of the spinal cord are very richly supplied by small blood vessels and small nerves. At times, the small nerves may become the source of the pain. Given the procedure was done 4 years prior, it is safe to assume that the tissues would have healed well. You may attempt to test and treat yourself, provided there is no other known back problems at this time. In sitting position, try to bend forward and touch the toes, move all the way forward as tolerated. Observe where the pain comes and rate it between 0 and 10. Now, try to repeat the same movement 10 times, and again rate it between 0 and 10. If you notice the numbers to be just the same or little less after 10 repetitions, it is safe for you to just repeat the forward bending 10 repetitions daily. If you notice the pain increases as you perform the repetitions, stop the task and consult an orthopaedician or orthopaedic physiotherapist to get evaluated further.
