Hi madam, actually the question is regarding my grandmother. She is 94 years old and is suffering from mood disorder and dementia. She is always angry scolding the family members who are serving her and beating, pinching etc. She will be normal hardly for a couple of hours during this time she will be quite normal and nice. She will not take her diet and medicines when she is angry. She is given qutipin 25 daily but of no use. Kindly advise.

Hello lybrate user, its really very difficult to manage an old-aged person with the problematic behaviours as you have mentioned. I don't think taking quitipin 25 only for her present condition is sufficient. She needs further psychiatric evaluation and more medications for better management of her mood disorders and dementia.

Selenium 30, 4 pills twice daily will help.

hi It's common at that age.the family has to be tolerant,it's easy said than done I understand but you can't push her for any change so what we can do is modify ourselves. people at that age suffer loneliness even when family stay around, they remember incidents in fringes and it is disturbing they are frustrated within themselves.please try to talk to her more, sometimes family gets irritated and raise their voice unintentionally so try to keep a check (not necessarily at your place but it happens).if she is in a state to play indoor games like ludo try playing that it will keep her happy and her brain functional. hope this works:)

When some treatment does not work, let your doctor know that it is not working. Ideally, she should be evaluated by a psychiatrist who can prescribe medicines for her aggressive behavior. This kind of behaviors are commonly seen in some types of dementia. She could also be prescribed medicines to slow down the progression of dementia. Visit your doctor at the earliest or consult a psychiatrist if you haven't.
