lybrate-user, In patients with hyperthyroidism, on treatment with anti-thyroid drugs, thyroid gland function does return to normal when treated for over 18 to 24 months. In some cases if Antithyroid drugs dosage is high, then patient may develop drug induced hypothyroidism. Once drug dosage is reduced or if discontinued, person may revert to normalcy or may even develop hyperactivity again. You have just mentioned that there has been hyper & hypothyroidism. RAI thereapy is usually recommended when oral antithyroid drugs have not reversed it or there has been a recurrence following stopage of drugs. Other options are either surgery (removal of the gland) or RAI. Post RAI, there will be hypothyroidism, which can easily be controlled with regular Levothyroxine treatment. If you have any doubts please do come back. Thanks.
