Hello doctor, my mother has diabetes, depression & ocd. She is taking medicine gepride 1m (2 tab) in morning before breakfast. Also she will start taking fluoxetine 20 after breakfast. Also she is taking fluvoxamine 100 mg in night, also she is taking quetiapine 50 mg in night. She has sugar level 190 in empty stomach in morning. Any other suggestion for medicine for her? Is there should be gap between galpride 1m & fluoxetine, if yes then how much gap should be there? Does fluoxetine cause insomnia? Do these medication (using for ocd & depression) cause for increasing sugar level? Now my mother sleeping well, she will start taking fluoxetine from tomorrow. Please give us suggestions, your suggestions are welcome. Request you to if there is any other suggestion, please suggest.

Hello, thanks for the query. I have seen the details drugs like fluoxetin and quetiapine do not directly affect blood glucose levels. In fact by controlling depression, the drugs help in achieving better glucose control. It is better to space the drugs. That is there should be a gap between anti-diabetic medication and these drugs of over an hour or so. However, fasting blood glucose of 190 mg is quite high. That is suggestive of uncontrolled diabetes. Ideally in a well controlled diabetic patient fasting glucose should be < 100 mg or closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 170 mg & hba1c% < 7%. It appears that she needs to give a closer look at her diet and exercise for better control of blood glucose. There may be a need for upgrading the drug treatment also. So please consult her physician to help achieve better glucose control. Thanks.
