This is a set up for depression. You must study right through the year and and you will be successful. Also you may have the exam panic that makes it difficult to study. Meet a counselor and get some help in that region. Most learning by now is audio-visual. The hearing and remembering, and the seeing and remembering are going to be very important. Of this the visual has a clear advantage over the audio mode of learning. However, it is the combination, with the visual being the primary mode of learning, that will give you the best results. So concentration in these two modes and their development will give your children a distinct advantage over the others. The eye exercise is really very simple: have the child hold a ball-point pen and move it in all directions, up and done, and near and far, but never out of sight and without any movement of the head; the kid should focus visually on the point of the pen which will normally reflect a point of light even if the source of light is behind the pen. The movement must be slow and smooth. The person watching the kid must time him in the following format: first, with both eyes the child will focus on the point for one minute, then the person monitoring the test will inform the kid, ?change?, then the kid should now block any one eye without pressing the eyeball. After one minute of this, ?change? will be told once again and the kid will have to block the other eye and focus on the point with the open eye. ?Change? will be said once more and the kid can open both eyes and watch the point of light for one more minute. The exercise stops at the end of four minutes. During the exercise no one should talk to the kid and the kid should not talk to anyone else, either. The ear exercise involves placing the kid seated in the central most part of the house, and he needs to be able to see a clock with a secondhand to it. Only one other person can do this exercise with him. When the kid is ready he will say, ?start? and the exercise begins. The one person doing the exercise with him will walk around the kid while initiating a dialogue with the kid. He will walk to all four extremities of the house while still maintaining a dialogue with the kid. When one minute is over the kid will block one ear still continuing the exercise. After one minute of this the kid will block the other ear and open the previous ear, while still continuing the conversation. After one minute of this the kid will open both ears and continue the dialogue. At the end of four minutes, the kid will announce, ?stop?. The exercise is done but the kid should now recall verbatim, the entire conversation. This recall is assessed roughly on the following criteria: 80% marks for the recall of content, 10% for the same order it was spoken, and 10% for the same language that was used. No interpretation is allowed. So you may give a complete score of 62%, for example, without breaking down the actual percentages obtained under each criterion. There should be no argument as to why these marks were given, and there should be no time given for ?trying? to recall. Some rules to follow when doing the exercise: keep it simple, talk slowly, and the topic must be thematic. Anyone of the two participants may start a topic. Both these exercises must be done at least four times a day, with a minimum gap of 30 minutes between each set of ear and eye exercise. This must be done every day without missing any for 10 weeks. If even one day is missed, you have to start the whole exercise all over again for 10 weeks. The scores must be recorded to see progress. If there is any emergency, it can be done at least twice of that day but the next day the four times a day must be resumed. The kid should not be helped to remember with any clues or hints. Here are some things you can do to get back your concentration and memory: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night?s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand?s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid junk food.
