Dear doctor, I am male, 65 years old, under gone bye pass 1997. From 2012 I have been taking daily morning and amaryl 1 mg, then 2 mg and 3 mg. I asked my gp to prescribe alternative to amaryl. He advised to take gp 3 mg along with glucobay 50 mg - both twice a day. Now fbs is < 130 and ppbs is < 190. Request your advise to take gp3 mg instead of amaryl 3 mg. Thank you.

Hello, thanks for the query. I have seen the details. Amaryl and gp both are same tablets containing glimiperide only difference being gp is more economical than amaryl. There are still more economical brands also available, if cost is the only concern. However, there is no mention as to why was the alternative drug asked. Your present glucose levels are fairly fine. Ideally fbg should be < 100 mg, pp 150 to 180 mg & hba1c% < 7% (not mentioned). Thanks.

Dear lybrate-user gp 3 tablet and amaryl tablet are the same drug glimiperide. It appears that on gp3 your blood sugars are under resonable control and so you can continue this in addition do the following to keep your sugars under control and to remain helathy reduce the quantity of carbohydrate (rice, wheat, rava, maida) in each meal and increase the quantity of protein (dhal, soya, egg white, fish or chicken). Take lot of green leafy vegetables walk 5 km per day and gradually reduce weight by 1 kg per month to about kg. Monitor blood sugars with glucometer as follows. Fasting and pp on wednesday and 2 hour after lunch and after dinner on sunday and maintain a record. If in spite of dietary adjustment your sugar levels continue to be high and if your hba1c is more than 8 % seek an online consultation to adjust your anti-diabetic drugs.
