Hello. I have been prescribed clonazepam, strain 50 mg and mirtazapine 7.5 mg and quetiapine 25 mg for anxiety disorder, borderline ocd and moderate depression, abnormal dreams and chronic insomnia. I am taking it since 1 n half month. The first phase was alright. In my second visit the doses were increased and quetiapine came to the prescription. I had very severe symptoms like breathlessness, anesthesia like feeling, alteration in olfaction and taste. The ears and nose felt blocked. Severe heaviness dizziness and an internal burning sensation. However, doctor had reduced the dosage and I was getting accustomed and soon in 3 to 4 days I got red patches all over my hands and legs. Dreadfully red. Extremely itchy. To an extent that my normal life is hampered and I am in pain. I consulted a dermatologist who has given me antihistamines. I started it a day back but till now no positive outcome. The psychiatrist asked me to stop all the medications for now except clonazepam. I am really worried that what is going wrong in the process and how can I get rid of these itchy patches. I am not able to bear this extreme discomfort. Please help. P.s:i also have migraine since 2014.

You have been prescribed multiple medicines at a time. This might have increased the chance of drug eruption but your psychiatrist has ceased most of them now, so this may help with resolution of your skin rash along with antihistamines. If required your dermatologist may consider topical betamethasone cream for the itchy rash and this should subside soon. If the rash is not increasing it is a reassurance that things should improve soon.

Dear lybrate-user, it is unfortunate that you developed a skin problem during the treatment of anxiety. Such skin problems can come from various causes apart from drug allergy. I hope you have tested negative for corona virus. There is a possibility of viral cause also. Anyway you doctor has stopped most of the drugs - not that they caused - they can be introduced later. Your dermatologist will help you to get rid of skin patches.

It appears that you have developed an allergic reaction to one of the medications. Most probably quetiapine as it was newly added and you got the patches soon after. However when the causative drug is unclear, it's better to stop all medications for some time. Till the rashes subside completely. Take the antihistaminics as prescribed. Just be in touch with the dermatologist. Avoid oily, spicy and fried food. Drink lots of water. Take paracetamol if very painful.
