I'm having terrible fear of public speaking. How can I be more confident and give presentations without any fear and will propranolol help me? I have heard about it. And would like to give it a try if it does the job.

Hi, 1 in 4 can have difficulty with public speaking. Would advice to consult psychiatrist to rule out any other anxiety such as generalised anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety and phobias to consider best medications. Propranolol can reduce heart rate and is contraindicated in cardiac conditions.

Dear lybrate-user, propranolol will help you to reduce the palpitations before and during the presentation. Apart from that, it will not build your confidence. You need to be diagnosed for your fear. It may be a simple phobia or a major depressive disorder or a medical illness. Depending on the diagnosis, you will be prescribed propranolol, anxiolytics or antidepressant, or psychotherapy or behaviour therapy or any combinations of these treatment methods. Please consult a psychiatrist who can diagnose your fear and treat accordingly.

Dear Lybrate user, with regard to the medication, a psychiatrist would be best to answer it. I'll also suggest that you go for psychological counseling/therapy to deal with public speaking anxiety and also for ruling out other forms of anxiety. Therapy can help you go to the root of the concerns behind the fear of public speaking and deal with it; helping you in managing your stage fright. Especially cognitive behaviour therapy can be helpful in this regard. It can help you deal with the thoughts behind your anxiety; helping you change your thoughts, behaviours and emotions into more adaptive ones. The skills you learn in therapy can be helpful in the long term as well. Please consult a psychologist and a psychiatrist. All the best! if you need help you can contact me as well on Lybrate.
