Hello Doctors, is eating peanuts and peanut butter good for hypothyroidism? I am taking 125 mcg Thyronorm every day. I need to know what foods are good and what foods to avoid. I am also under treatment for diabetes and I am using Glyciphage. Thank you for your knowledge.

Mr. lybrate-user, If hypothyroidism is present following things (foods, veges) need to be avoided - soy beans, soy containing foods, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peanuts, mustard, radish and coffee. The reason for avoiding these products is that they affect thyroxine absorption and action. But some times other than soy beans and soy products rest of the things can be taken, but well after 4 hours of the dosage of thyroxine. Plus you should avoid bakery items, other products made out of maida. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. For being free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. As regards diabetes control it is essential to maintain fasting glucose closer to 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8. Thanks.
