Laparoscopic surgery can be used to treat infertility caused by endometriosis
1 of 5
Endometriosis is a condition where endometrial tissue or the tissue lining the uterus begins to grow outside the uterus. In mild to moderate cases of endometriosis, laparoscopy may be the preferred mode of surgery. In such cases, surgery aims at removing the excess endometrial tissue. While this improves a woman s fertility rate, it may not be a long-term solution for endometriosis. In cases of severe endometriosis, laparoscopic surgery is not advised. Minimal damage to other organs in the abdominal cavity is one of the biggest advantages of endoscopic surgery for endometriosis as compared to open surgery.

Laparoscopic procedures are considered relatively safe and have a high success rate. However, as with any other surgical procedures, there are a few risks involved. This includes temporary bladder infections after the surgery, skin irritation at the site of the incision, infections and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. If you experience severe abdominal pain, a high fever or pus from the incision site, consult a doctor immediately.

Fibroids can also cause infertility. These fibroids can block the opening of the fallopian tubes or cause abnormal contractions. The good news is that fibroids can be removed laparoscopically to treat infertility triggered by their presence. This type of surgery is much quicker and has a lower recovery period as compared to open abdominal surgery for fibroid removal. Laparoscopy can be used to remove both subserosal and intramural fibroids.

A blockage in the fallopian tube or excessive scarring can keep an egg from reaching the uterus and in turn from being fertilized. Laparoscopic surgery to address such issues is known as tubal surgery. A tubal reanastomosis is a laparoscopic procedure used to repair damaged parts of the fallopian tube. Surgery to remove part of the fallopian tube is known as Salpingectomy. If excessive scar tissue has blocked the fallopian tubes, surgery may be advised to create a new opening from the fallopian tube to the ovaries. Recovering from a laparoscopic procedure is much faster as compared to open surgery. A woman should be able to resume her normal activities within 4-6 weeks after such a surgery.
Laparoscopy can help identify the factors causing infertility
5 of 5
Laparoscopy can be sued to identify and treat elements that cause infertility. A laparoscope can be described as a tin, optical tube with a camera and light at one end. To identify infertility triggers, the doctor will make a small incision in the patient s abdomen and insert a laparoscope through it. This allows the surgeon to take a look at the abdominal organs and issues if any. Laparoscopy is often advised in cases of pain during intercourse, severe menstrual cramps and if the doctor suspects an ectopic pregnancy. Diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy is the investigation of choice in an infertile couple after ruling out any hormonal imbalance, male factors and establishing proper ovulation because it gives 100% guidance about the pathology and mode of treatment.
