Hello doctor. I am a 34 years old female. My father and mother both have the problem of high cholesterol. They are really struggling hard to keep it under control. I am afraid I will go through the same problem in the future. I don?t lead a very healthy lifestyle because of my night shifts but still I will try everything possible. Doctor please let me know how I can prevent high levels of cholesterol?

It is important to keep your cholesterol in a healthy range. It not only lowers the risk of heart diseases and stroke, but also maintains your overall health. High cholesterol can be prevented by the following- 1) eat healthy food: foods that are rich in saturated fat (cheese, fatty meats, and dairy desserts) should be consumed in a limit. Try consuming food that is naturally high in fiber such as beans and oatmeal. 2) maintain healthy weight: obesity and being overweight increase the levels of bad cholesterol. Excess body fat slows down the body's ability to remove bad cholesterol from blood and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. 3) regular physical exercise: routine physical activity helps in maintaining a healthy body weight that results in lower cholesterol levels. A combination of moderate to intense physical activities, for about 2.5 hours, on a day-to-day basis is recommended for adults. 4) quit smoking: smoking is the primary cause for many diseases. It damages the blood vessels and increases the risk of heart diseases. 5) limit alcohol consumption: consuming liquor in excess increases cholesterol levels. Two drinks per day for men and single drink each day for women are considered the maximum limit.
