Is functional scoliosis common? I am confused about the symptoms of two types of scoliosis.

When a person has functional scoliosis, they might present with an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, but will have no spinal rotation, and the spine's structure will still be normal. Signs and symptoms of scoliosis may include: uneven shoulders. One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other. Uneven waist. One hip higher than the other. One side of the rib cage jutting forward. A prominence on one side of the back when bending forward. Functional scoliosis is different from structural scoliosis. Functional scoliosis arises from something external to the spine that causes the spine to adopt a curved posture. Examples of this may be asymmetrical movement habits (such as asymmetrical sports or carrying a baby always on the 1 hip) or leg length discrepancy (a leg length discrepancy in a growing individual must be monitored by the appropriate specialist). Functional scoliosis is usually much milder in curve size than structural scoliosis. Usually pilates conditioning is able to assist these milder curves, when taught in the studio environment with well selected exercises and specific cuing by a pilates practitioner with scoliosis knowledge. We provide some select scoliosis-specific pilates sessions for these milder functional curves. After assessment and some initial training here, we are happy to pass on any knowledge and specific recommendation with your local pilates practitioners you may have been working with, so that exercise modifications may be considered specific to your particular curve.
