I have been diagnosed with grave's disease due to hyperthyroidism and am taking treatment from past one and half years. The tablet neo-mercazole started with 40 mg has been reduced to 20 mg 9 months back. But since 6 months the dosage is not being able to reduce below 20 mg. So is it safe to continue or is there any other remedy for this.

Hello, Thanks for the query. The present dosage of neo-mecazole 20 mg a day is quite safe as a maintenance one. Usually treatment is continued for about 18 to 24 months. Once tsh leves increase to wards normal (0.5 to 4.5 mu/l), treatment is either dicontinued or dose may be reduced. Most often treatment is stopped after 24 months. In most cases hyperthyroidism may not return. However, if there is recurrence, then other options are considered. Thanks.
