My son aged 27 years had a serious accident 10 years ago. He suffered from head injury and was operated upon. Though he is alright now, he gets angry very soon. Sometimes he reacts to things in a very inappropriate manner. Is there any link between the head injury and the anger etc.

Hello Ms. lybrate-user The answer is yes. Traumatic brain injury definitely causes behavioural problems in long run. Treatment is behavioural counselling from psychological counsellor. Alternatively, Get NCCT scan Head done. We need to discuss more about your symptoms so, kindly get these investigations done and review as early as possible. Very difficult to say. However, even if it is related, he needs to address the anger by expressing it appropriately. Have him meet with a counselor and learn the art of dealing with his emotions in particular anger. The counselor may also explore deeper causes of the anger if it is so.

Hi, Thanks for writing in; welcome to the forum. Yes, it would certainly seem that there is a link. Many possibilities exist as to the exact nature of the problem that has resulted in inappropriate behavior and anger. The first thing that any expert would consider is an organic personality change or a frontal lobe syndrome that characteristically presents with the exact symptoms that you have mentioned. Other causes include anxiety, depressive and psychotic changes due to head injury. The exact diagnosis can be made based on a review of all records and an interview with the patient. The organic personality change can be improved to an extent with treatment. The other causes that I mentioned also can get better and have higher chances of getting better than the organic personality. Please consult an expert in person for exact diagnosis and management. Take care!
